Amitabh Bachchan has made such a huge impact on us that even if the big guy commits a murder, his legion of supporters would not only forgive him, they would justify the kill. The matter of recklessly posting poems of other people on social networking sites, and discrediting the real author, is a serious issue but Amitabh Bachchan, being Amitabh Bachchan, has shown little concern. The latest incidence of hurting the sentiments of ordinary people, and then choosing to remain quiet, is unbecoming of a so-called icon. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a respectable writer. The son should not defile his legacy with such lowly acts.
By virtue of giving memorable performances throughout his career, he has become a living legend, and perhaps, deservedly so. He is the symbol of Hindi cinema and the most influential man in Bollywood.
What most people don’t know is that Amitabh Bachchan is the creation of Salim Khan, Salman Khan’s father. Big B’s hard work paled before his good fortune. Salim’s vision and effort that went into moulding Amitabh Bachchan is a story that you will hardly find him talking about. He took credit when it certainly wasn’t his to take. Through ‘Deewar’ and zanjeer’, Salim gave birth to a star that went down in history as Indian cinema’s greatest icons! Sadly, Amitabh has taken every honour and credit as a reward for his own brilliance, leaving Salim behind as a remnant of the past.
The Bachchans’ public portrayal of a perfect family is a put off. The ideal family unity that is displayed in public functions and appearances is stage-managed to keep the Bachchan dynasty floating. His public relations machinery works over time to arrange TV slots, interviews, appearances and what have you! His air-brushed appearances on TV programmes hardly suits a 70-plus man.
Om Puri once rightly pointed out that had it not been for Mr Bachchan, Abhishek would have perished long ago. The senior Bachchan uses his influence to keep his below-par son floating. The tendency of the Bachchans to be in the news is offensive. The way Aishwarya Rai refused to leave the red carpet in Cannes shows she still craves for the cameras. The family as a whole lacks the gravity.
Amitabh Bachchan was nothing before the movie Zanjeer. He was fond of acting, but as a child, he never imagined that he would one day enter films. But this tall, young man boarded a train that took him to the city of opportunities and heartbreak – Mumbai. It was tough in the beginning. He was rejected because of his 6 feet 3 inches height and his unconventional looks. In fact, Amitabh also tried to use the one other unique characteristic that he had, his voice. You’ll be shocked to know, Amitabh Bachchan was rejected by the All India Radio because of his heavy voice.
After trying continuously, Amitabh did twelve back to back movies, but he failed. People didn’t like him at all. Then came Zanjeer, his 13th movie and turned his life around. The movie was a big success, courtesy of Salim Khan. He was the one who gave ‘Angry young man’ image that has defined Bachchan’s persona. The image was conceptualized by Salim Khan for the film Zanjeer. A generous Salim Khan never took credit for this, nor did he expect Amitabh to acknowledge.
Amitabh Bachchan would have been nothing without Salim Khan today, at least not as big as he has become.
Like father like son. Salman Khan does pretty much the same thing that father Salim Khan believed in – helping others.
