Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday demanded for paper ballots in the upcoming Delhi municipal corporation elections, fearing that faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) may cause AAP’s downfall. The Delhi Chief Minister alleged that his party’s defeat in the recent state assembly elections was the result of tampered voting machines.

The biggest failure in the current Assembly polls was met by Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. True, other parties bit the bullet, but the fall of Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP produced such a thud that it overpowered all other political speculations. That Samajawadi Party might lose to BJP in Uttar Pradesh was predicted by many; the rise of the BJP in Manipur was expected, and chances of AAP holding majority in Goa was met with apprehensions.

But one thing that several political analysts predicted was the win of AAP in Punjab. Even the exit polls predicted a resounding victory for AAP. So it’s natural then, Arvind Kejriwal is upset. Not someone to lie low so soon, the Delhi Chief Minister immediately diverted his angst at the EVMs.

Taking a cue from the Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati, Arvind Kejriwal raised doubts over the reliability of EVM. The Delhi CM has claimed that the votes for his Aam Aadmi Party got transferred to the Shirmonai Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janta Party alliance during Punjab polls. But does the noise about an EVM scam hold any water?

Questioning a new technology is the norm. In the past, doubts were raised over EVMs. In 2013, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to introduce a paper trail in EVMs. The BJP too, had questioned the success of EVMs back then. But after such huge success in Uttar Pradesh, the party is content. Naturally then, it’s now the time for the losers to create a ruckus, blaming the voting machines.

Kejriwal’s allegations sound like yet another of his cribbing, where for his every failure, fingers were raised at the BJP, and especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the recent past, the state CM had called the PM a psychopath. And it’s still fresh in the public memory.

Very soon, Arvind Kejriwal’s allegations of an EVM scam will be obliterated by other accusations that he will raise against something or someone. For the nation, he has become the shepherd who falsely cried wolf!
