What lies underneath: Subramaniam Swamy’s breathless hounding of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi has a hidden agenda – Finish them off!

Beneath Subramaniam Swamy’s unyielding investigations of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, in the name of exposing corruption for national interest, could lay a far deeper, darker interest. Finish off the Gandhis, and the Congress Party, for good! It’s not achievable, but Swamy is Swamy, he is terribly valiant, and disastrously thick. If he continues to play politics of vendetta, he will go down before he can even spell RAHUL.

Subramaniam Swamy

Swamy has no interest in anything else in this world, it seems. Every time he appears on television, he is talking about the devils of Indian politics. That’s what he surely must feel about the hapless Congress party. The grand old party is guilty of multiple transgressions, flagship cases being the 2G spectrum scam, the Commonwealth Games scam, Coal scam, Chopper scam, Tatra truck scam, Cash-for-vote scam, and more, but they don’t deserve hatred.

Swamy has forced Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to appear before the Delhi High Court on Saturday to answer charges of corruption in the case of the National Herald Scam. His complaint says that the Indian National Congress granted an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), owner of the National Herald newspaper. He alleged that the loan was either not repaid or repaid in cash, which is in violation of the Income Tax Act.

Apparently, a closely-held company, Young Indian, was incorporated in November 2010 with a capital of RS 5 lakh only, and went on to acquire almost all the shareholding of AJL and all its properties (alleged to be worth US$750 million. Swamy has alleged criminal misappropriation by Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi in this matter.

If found guilty, they go to jail – the beginning of their end. It would then be easy to accomplish the mission of demolishing Congress. But this is not the kind of politics that we need, let alone want. But witch-hunting is in the DNA of India politics. We will forever have to tolerate it.

Subramaniam Swamy

If Swamy wants to expose corruption in the country, there are others besides the Gandhis. Why isn’t he so relentless about Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati, Sharad Pawar? Because they are all local-level leaders, therefore not national competitions? Why isn’t he after Jayalalitha… because she is a prospective future alliance? He went after her only once, in 1996. What about Nitin Gadkari and B Yeddyurappa? They may be tainted, but they are home-bred, part of Swamy’s alliance, so left alone.

Swamy himself has played his cards well, positioning himself in a place of power from where he shoots at his fancy. The former Janata Party president merged with the BJP in 2013, just a year before the national elections. He easily saw the mood of the nation that was fed up with Congress and looked forward to the BJP, and he capitalized.

Subramaniam Swamy

Swamy’s history is not on his side. His views have been arrogant, self-serving.

The Tamil Nadu-born, 76-year-old politician believes that Hindus are the target, and that Muslims of India are being programmed by a slow, reactive process to become radical, sliding them into suicide against the Hindus. Such a thought process could possibly not belong to a forward-looking, 21st century Indian.

He also wants to enact a national law prohibiting conversion from Hindu religion to any other religion. So if someone in Free India wanted to convert to Islam or Christianity, he would be jailed. This is the most repulsive statement: Only Muslims who “acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus” be allowed to vote in India. He wants to propagate the development of a Hindu mindset…

Subramaniam Swamy

It’s difficult, as far as I am personally concerned, to credit Subramaniam Swamy with my support. Sonia and Rahul may or may not be guilty, but the manner in which Swamy is singling them out is nothing but dirty politics.
