Back-seat driving: As the largest party, Lalu Prasad Yadav could arm-twist Nitish Kumar! The CM will bend over only so much.

The Narendra Modi-led BJP should not go into hiding. Only Ravi Shankar Prasad, Shah Nawaz, and a few more tier-2 leaders appeared in the media to speak on the embarrassing loss in Bihar. The need of the hour is for the top leaders to come out and take responsibility, say they botched it up. PM Modi himself, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, and the others should indulge the media and use it as an opportunity to send out a message: “We are not cry babies. We respect the mandate. Yes, there are trouble-makers in the party and we failed to rein them in on time, but it’s lesson learnt. We only rue the fact that the people of Bihar denied us the opportunity to show them that the State can reach great heights if managed without corrupt practices.”

Narendra Modi should not appear as if he is sulking. He should take on hard questions, and answer them with absolute honesty. Indians appreciate admission of guilt, of truth. India is an emotional country, we forgive very easily…

The Prime Minister’s office should immediately schedule a radio broadcast, or an appearance on national television, not for “Mann ki baat”, but for an uninhibited admission of how, why, and where things went all wrong…

But what happened in Bihar is truly typical of its people, the Biharis. I am a Bihari myself… Quite a large section of the innocent, pure-at-heart Biharis have developed this tendency to bear pain and suffering. They are comfortably numb to everything bad and ugly. They don’t care if Lalu embezzled billions of US dollars in the fodder scam, they don’t care if Lalu is a Court-declared convict, involved in several corrupt practices, and they don’t mind Lalu fielding his sons and daughter in politics without any qualification. He has always believed in nepotism, even his distant relatives have found footing in Bihar politics, courtesy of their messiah.

To repeatedly vote for such a man reflects Bihar’s curse. Be that as it may, the people have spoken decisively. There’s nothing to be done about it now, not till 2020, at least, when fresh elections happen. However, the fragile combo of Nitish Kumar and Lalu, political analysts say, may not last long, and there could be breakdown in the State Government. Lalu Yadav’s RJD has received the highest number of votes. He will likely flex his muscles to influence policies and accommodate his own political interests. Whether Nitish Kumar bends for Lalu or not, and for how long, only time will tell.
