Everyone loves a state head who interacts with the masses, and the popularity soars furthermore when the youth is connected in a digital way. The media-savvy minister emerged as the world’s second-most popular leader on social networking website, Facebook, and micro-blogging site, Twitter.
A study by public relations and communications firm, Burson-Marsteller, revealed that Narendra Modi has over 31.9 million fans on his personal Narendra Modi Facebook page, and 17.4 million followers on Twitter. PM Modi trails behind Barack Obama. The US President ranks as the most popular leader with 46.6 million likes on FB and 68.6 million followers on Twitter.
According to the study, PM Narendra Modi’s page had over 200 million interactions in 2015, in the form of post likes, comments and shares. He is the most talked about political personality in the social media.
In India, PM Narendra Modi’s popularity is second only to Amitabh Bachchan who has 18.9 million twitter followers. In a country where film stars are treated as next to god, it’s refreshing to see the PM toppling Shah Rukh Khan in terms of online popularity. The PM and the ‘Shahenshah’ of Bollywood could sit over a glass of organic juice (Bachchan doesn’t take tea or coffee) and have a friendly banter over their stiff competition on the micro blogging website.
It’s a healthy trend that the PM office is active on social media, and we get first-hand information about the happenings. A great camera-lover, Narendra Modi keeps sure his followers are updated about his visits, both national and international, his plans, and his meetings with international dignitaries. There is a great sense of transparency and accountability due to his constant interaction with his followers.
While Rahul Gandhi’s account is operated by his office, I wondered whether Narendra Modi is any different. If he is personally handling the account, how does he manage time? He has so much to handle, both at home and abroad. There must surely be a dedicated army of techies taking care of his FB Page and Twitter handle.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn otherwise. A recent media report revealed that RTI applications were filed, putting a query as to who was behind Narendra Modi’s social media posts. The Prime Minister’s Office replied: Narendra Modi updates his own social media accounts.
This is a lesson in time management!
