Pakistan’s media cooks up conspiracy curries so often that it can be considered the staple diet of the nation. Excluding a few sane media houses, the entire industry bombards the masses with a singular assumption ‘The entire world conspires against Pakistan’. And America and India top the list in creating chaos for Pakistan.
Terror attacks, economic slowdown, political issues, and natural calamities in Pakistan have one culprit: India. Many Pakistanis believe that India uses its dams to manipulate the flow of water to Pakistani fields.
According to some Pakistani think tanks, India is jealous of its neighbour’s progress, and keeps working on agendas to subvert Pakistan’s development. Propounding a ridiculous conspiracy theory, a certain Zaid Hamid from Pakistan had made India responsible for the 2010 floods that killed 2,000 people, and rendered millions homeless. Incessant rains after a sweltering summer in 2010 drowned almost 20% of Pakistan.
Hamid deduces: “It is two weeks since the rains stopped but water continues to rise in the rivers Indus and Chenab. There was no flooding in India or in Afghanistan. Never before have rivers in all the provinces of Pakistan flooded at the same time without a similar act affecting the upstream, the source… the simultaneous floods covering all of Pakistan and in all of the rivers flowing in from Afghanistan and Indian-occupied Kashmir is something truly unprecedented…
There is every likelihood that what we are seeing today is that the Indians and the US-backed regime in Kabul are using water as a weapon for the first time to deluge Pakistan.”
Hamid is just reiterating the common conspiracy theory believed to be true by a lot of Pakistanis. He says, “All major rivers flowing into Pakistan, including the Indus, are blocked by Indian-built dams. India’s Baghliar Dam in occupied Kashmir opened its flood gates to cause a tragedy on the plains of Pakistan [Sindh and Punjab]. The Sarobi Dam – the Indian-maintained dam near Kabul – controls the flow of the Kabul River entering Pakistan. The same thing happened there.”
Another absurd theory put forward by Waqas Ahmed in his book Reality of Floods In Pakistan says that India prepared some combination of drones, chemical-emitting planes, ground-based cloud seeding generators, ionospheric heaters, and aerosol rockets to make rains of biblical proportion. Never mind that Ahmed fails to explain how these machines went undetected in the Pakistani sky.
Pakistani terrorists don’t lag behind in spewing venom against India. Hafiz Saeed, the man who masterminded the Mumbai attacks in 2009, blamed India for causing the devastating floods in Pakistan.
While on his visit to flood-hit villages in 2014, Saeed told Reuters, “India irrigates its deserts and dumps extra water on Pakistan without any warning.”
When it comes to weaving fantasies, Pakistan cooks the best stories. If only they put their minds to better use in erecting dams and using resources in development rather than funding militants. While they rack their brains on such baseless theories, the world has a good laugh at their ‘scientific finds’.
