‘Don’t watch porn online!’ Does it sound like parental advisory? This is what the Army tells its troops. Our soldiers don’t need such schoolboy treatment

Embarrassed and outsmarted in the recent Ranjith KK incident, the Army has come up with a 10-point don’t do list for its personnel. Among other things, the advisory asks its staff not to watch porn on social media.

Despite all its seriousness, the circular seems more a parent advisory for its wayward underage kids. I agree, the overenthusiastic air force man divulged too much over promises of physical intimacy, but, that is just a case of one rotten tomato. The advisory is exactly prohibiting its people to not to things that the ISIS has been doing for some time. No military guy in his right senses would post a picture posing with a gun in the social media.

Yeah, I agree some over-enthusiastic relatives of a soldier might post a picture of their near and dear ones on the social media. People like to show off! But this has been taken care of too. Among other things, army men should not save sensitive data on their laptop or mobile. Now haven’t we all seen in those top Hollywood movies, how data gets transmitted on the sly, bringing the earth to near destruction? We just need to watch more such movies detailing hi-tech gullibility.

The desperation of Ranjith is just the tip of the iceberg. With personnel posted in god-forsaken places, where their only company is the chilled wind and a mug of brandy, it’s likely that they seek some pleasure, albeit digital. That’s a small dose of indulgement that they deserve. Away from their beloved spouses and pitted against the harshest of climatic conditions, if our soldiers chose to have a little ‘me time’, we should overlook the matter.

The only lesson that the Army needs to impart at such times is getting web smart. Sensitising its troops, from top to the bottom ranks about the lurking online fraudsters, is the only way we can avoid such sticky situations in the future. A blanket ban is definitely not the answer!
